BEST FOR RECOVERY
The SMARTWOOL PHD GRADUATED COMPRESSION ULTRA LIGHT ($38) made converts out of many compression-sock cynics. “I was skeptical of whether they worked,” wrote one triathlete, “but now I’m a believer. The morning after a four-hour bike ride, these socks had me raring to go; I had no soreness in my feet and legs.” The socks aren’t supertight, so you can wear them overnight. Available mid-August. smartwool.com
BEST FOR LONG LEGS
A self-described “leggy” 6’1″ triathlete felt the CRAFT COOL COMPRESSION SOCKS ($35) were almost too tall for him. But he still dug how these anatomically correct socks (made specifically for left and right feet) held his calves and arches. The compression supplies a firm hug that made several testers feel more energized during workouts, although the socks woke up one tester when she tried to sleep in them. craft-usa.com
BEST FOR KEEPING LEGS PEPPY
The pricey CEP RUNNING COMPRESSION SOCKS ($60) may set your finances back but put your training ahead. While wearing them, one tester felt she could push herself hard without worrying about risking injury. Overall, testers found the socks weren’t too tight and offered an ideal amount of compression. “They felt snug but never made me feel like my calves were suffocating,” said one marathoner. cepcompression.com
BEST FOR TARGETED RELIEF
Unlike the uniform compression of other socks, the CW-X COMPRESSION SUPPORT SOCKS ($35) offer isolated support of the calf, ankle, and arch of the foot. This worked like a charm for some testers, including a marathoner who felt that the squeeze along the back of the socks provided reinforcement to her tender Achilles tendon. Bonus: The antimicrobial properties of the fabric help eliminate stench. cw-x.com
EASIEST TO GET ON FAST
Several testers found the 2XU COMPRESSION RACE SOCKS ($55) easier to put on than other compression socks they’d worn—even when slowed by their foot-specific anatomical design. “It takes less than 20 seconds,” one triathlete reported. They might be easy to pull on because they’re shorter and not as tight as other socks. Yet, according to testers, the socks still provided enough support on long runs to reduce fatigue. 2XU.com
BEST FOR RACE DAY
The targeted support of the SUGOI R+R (RACE AND RECOVERY) KNEE HIGH COMPRESSION SOCKS ($40) gripped testers’ calves and seemed to goose them into action. One Ironman competitor said the first time she put them on, she felt she could PR a 5-K. “My legs warmed up faster and my calves felt alert and tingly,” she said. She added that “the sock’s fabric kept lingering odors at bay, even after four wearings.” sugoi.com
BEST FOR SENSITIVE FEET
Runners and triathletes with foot problems—blisters, numbness, and flexion issues—sang the praises of the UNDERARMOUR REVENANT ($20). “The smooth seam and stretchy material allowed flexibility and prevented blistering,” wrote one Ironman who has tried numerous compression socks. And the Revenant’s not-too-tight squeeze even helped a tester avoid toe numbness on long runs. underarmour.com
Sleep Tight
A compression suit for a more restful slumber.
WHILE IT MAY LOOK more suitable for fighting crime than sleeping, the Saucony Recovery Suit ($200) is designed to speed recovery and minimize tissue damage while you snooze. Saucony claims that the titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide, and silica lining the fabric of the suit boost oxygen levels in the body as well as the body’s ability to utilize it. In our own nocturnal tests, we found that it actually prevented postexertion muscle soreness. The one-piece compression garment takes some time to wrestle on—and off—which can be an issue when nature calls at 2 a.m. But several testers had their soundest nights of sleep in years wearing the suit—and they didn’t overheat, which some had feared.
Studies show how effective a squeeze can be—for some.
UNTIL RECENTLY, there wasn’t much scientific evidence to justify wearing compression socks. But a 2009 German study clearly indicates that they enhance performance during hard runs. And research done in South Africa and New Zealand shows that knee-highs also improve recovery by boosting blood flow in the extremities.
Yet they still aren’t for everyone. Earlier this year a German study conducted on uber-fit athletes reported no performance payoffs from compression. According to the study, the socks work better when they’re squeezing more performance out of non-elites.
